problem in educational system in HK

The educational system in Hong Kong is examination orientated. I am not saying that examination is a bad thing, because sometime students really need some exam or quiz to stimulate their studying.

However, the result of the exam is too important that we cannot just treat it as a motivation. Some of the examinations like HKALE and HKCEE (in the old educational system) can affect people's whole life. So, it is easy to understand why students focus on the result but not what they have learnt.

For those students who prepare the open exam, they might focus more on examination skill rather than the knowledge. This also leads to many students want to go to tutorial classes, this cost a lot and a little bit time consuming. Beside learn the skill, students need to remember, just memorize what the marking scheme says.

Another thing is about the curriculum. The subjects provided by the universities in Hong Kong are very limited. Back to the secondary school, we need to select stream in F.4 (in the old system). After F.4, I don't have music lesson, art lesson. The only lessons I had were those with open exam. I think this cannnot help develop the creativity and imagination of students.

  1. I am totally agree of the point which you mentioned the subjects provided by the universities in Hong Kong are very limited. It leads to Hk students don't have creatinity and imagination. They just memorize all the things which are on the notes. But after the exam, they will forget everything!

  3. Very true. I hated why they had to take away music and stronger components of visual arts as subjects. Now, if we are to go into University, and we wanted to pursue music and art, it might be difficult to find the relevant qualifications IN school. rather, you have to *dan dan dan* pay for more expensive external exam programs...

yes, there are exams that mean something, but what do the marks really matter if you feel you didn't learn anything "useful"

as for the new system, the "NSS", we would have to wait and see what happens to those students. my younger brother is in the new system, and honestly, his position on his future with the new exam "HKDSE", doesn't look comfortable. there's too many things we all don't know about it.

  4. I usually guess that they take away art and music lesson because not every students have the talent and they are not subjects accepted by the public. So, school would like to focus more on the "core". If gov. does not prompt healthy life style, I think P.E. lesson would be taken away too.

For the new system, I sometimes worry about it. Esp the students in the first two year, they are like lab rats. Too many things are uncertain. e.g. the recognisation around the world of HKDSE, is it better to have one public exam only, etc.....
